This is not an intellectual judgement, just some friendly advice on how to best enjoy your own existence. I mentioned this in my review of Dan Brown’s Inferno – I’m not going to judge anyone’s book preferences, but if you’d rather be watching a movie, you should go and do that. However, length is not one of my main problems with it, and I feel someone who apologises for the page count of his work is someone who has written for an audience who don’t really enjoy reading. Indeed, it is a very long book, 888 pages in the edition I just finished. Go buy it, and hole yourself up for a few days.Īnd no surprise that there’s a film in the pipeline (though how long that pipeline will turn out to be, we’ll have to wait and see).At the end of I Am Pilgrim, author Terry Hayes has put in a note entitled “Dear reader”, which essentially apologises for why the book is so long. Maybe not having to finish it and put it down. I can’t think of a better one I’ve read the whole year. They might not be able to get football right, but they seem to know their thrillers.
Maybe the I Am Pilgrim title reminded me of I Am Legend, maybe because there’s a sticker with “The only thriller you need to read this year” from The Guardian on the front of my version. It’s not like I haven’t got a zillion in my TBR pile already. I can’t really recall why I bought this in the first place. Strong, well-grounded plot (no James Bond super villains nonsense here), relevant themes, action, suspense, bits where you have to have your wits about you and bits where you wish you’d had more of your wits about you, earlier.
Even after 900-odd pages.Īctually, I couldn’t have been more stunned if it had fallen on my head from a great height.Įxcellently put together, written and executed, it has all the elements a modern thriller should have.
